As long as we're worrying about random chance, there are any number of rocky objects hurtling through space, some as large as planets. If even a fairly large one struck Earth, it could end all life.

We've got some underfunded programs looking for them, but if the rock was fairly non-reflective, we might not even see it coming. A good argument for spreading beyond Earth.
