My favorite book on the subject of religion is Mark Twain's Letters from the Earth. Too controversial, even for his daughter, allowed by her to be published for the first time in 1962. Hilarious. What a realist he was!
The book consists of a series of short stories, many of which deal with God and Christianity. The title story consists of eleven letters written by the archangel Satan to archangels Gabriel and Michael, [1] about his observations on the curious proceedings of earthly life and the nature of man's religions.

I'm agnostic but think it's a cute honorable trait that most humans believe in God. Like most dogs loving humans; naturally, instinctively. I personally think it's one of the better parts of human nature. And the best of the religious ones really do some good stuff. But the "why?" part has alway perplexed me... why the obsession with God in our species? Lots of explications, but none satisfactory. It's a great mystery.
Why the obsession?

Only god knows.

Oh wait...
