Japan chip makers reportedly to shift to 64M DRAM chips from 16M by early 1998

AFX, Tuesday, December 02, 1997 at 17:46

TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - Microchip makers such as Toshiba Corp, NEC Corp,
Hitachi Ltd and the like will shift the focus of their memory chip production
to 64 megabit dynamic random access memory (DRAM) microchips from 16M DRAM
chips by early 1998, the Nihon Keizai newspaper reported.
This is about half a year earlier than originally expected, it reported.
Despite the shift, the sharp fall in prices of 64M DRAM chips means that
the change-over will not materially impact earnings, it reported.
By end-1997, NEC's monthly production of 64M DRAM microchips will reach
about 5 mln units compared with 11 mln units of 16M DRAM chips, it reported.
Toshiba's monthly output of 64M DRAM chips by end-1997 will rise to 2 mln
units compared with 7 mln units of 16M DRAM chips, it reported.
Hitachi's output of 64M DRAM chips by January or February will reach 2.5
mln units compared with 10 mln units a month of 16M DRAM chips.
Fujitsu Ltd will complete its shift from about February as it builds up
output from its new plant in the U.S.

SB,

I can't wait to finally read the 10Q for this Dec quarter. It should be very interesting to see where those millions of $$$$ that MU say's they have for investment are.
