UMC sees 1997 net profit at 9 bln twd up from forecast 8 bln

TAIPEI (AFX-ASIA) - United Microelectronics Corp said it expects its 1997
net profit to top 9 bln twd, up from its official forecast of 8 bln.
Chief financial officer Gary Tseng said net profit in the 10 months to
October was around 7 bln twd.

fyi, the entire semi sector has serious trouble, says ML analyst Tom Kerlak. He said the 1998 will be a "downslope". That's pretty scary, considering that ALSC has been on the downslope since Sep. after hit $15, and has already lost 60% of its value. Here is the link.
