And the Surprise Winner....

The East Bay College Fund, BUBBA'S Charity. Details here: eastbaycollegefund.org

Over the last 20 years I've been very active in such programs in the Washington, D.C. area. I've found it very rewarding to help out those students who have helped themselves, often under very adverse circumstances. I'll be sending $250 myself.

I also wanted to thank Bubba for keeping this great contest going. I know there's a lot of work each week keeping everything up-to-date. It's a lot of fun for us, a lot of work for Mr. B. Plus he may never actually win himself.

Bubba helped me make some pretty serious money this year with his 2012 pick of Tekmira (TKMR) which climbed from $1.50 to $4.81. I studied it and bought a chunk. I know a lot of the stories but always use this board to try to find something new.

FYI, while my 2012 picks were pretty amazing, my largest actual holding was the only stock that went down (big time) ONTY. That's the life of a biotech junkie. Regards, Steve Newby

12/31/12 Final Contest Update
It’s Official: GENE’s portfolio gets the Gold in the 2012 Biotech Stock Charity Contest!
Congratulations GENE!!!
First place GENE’s portfolio wound up the year with a terrific 150.19% YTD gain. Second place, RKRW’s portfolio, also finished with a super triple-digit YTD gain of 133.81%. And most investors would be more than satisfied with the 61.07% YTD gain of third place BIOMAV’s portfolio.
It was definitely a hot year for biotech stocks. The Contest median finished 2012 with an impressive 25.29% gain. The Nasdaq Biotech Index did even better, with a 31.91% gain, while the Nasdaq Composite Index was up a mere 15.91% YTD.
At the year-end close, 6 of the 38 Contest portfolios were in the red, with 14 of the 38 portfolios beating the NBI.
Below is the closing Top Eleven list (I decided to post the Top 11 as No. 10 & No. 11 were so close).
Also below are the Top 5 & Worst 5 Stocks ranked by % Gained and % Lost for 2012. (Foreign stock prices are not converted to US$ in this table.)
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
I will try to post more YTD performance data, including data for all portfolio picks over the next week.
On a personal note, I much appreciate the kind words many of you have posted thanking me for administering the Contest. I’m also exceptionally pleased that many of you donated to the East Bay College Fund on my behalf. And, thanks again to Contest champ GENE (Steve) for surprising me by also picking EBCF as his charity choice.
For those who missed the EBCF link, here it is: eastbaycollegefund.org
And here’s the link to the board with Guidelines for the 2013 Biotech Charity Contest:
Subject 59069
(The final 2013 Contest deadline is Monday, 1/14/2013 4pm EST. So there’s still plenty of time to pick a stock portfolio.)
Best wishes for a healthy, prosperous & joyful 2013 biotechies!
