I can hear you now at on a jobsite, addressing your fellow employees.

"What kind of idiots are you, entering the office pool? You do realize only three of you are going to win money, and only one of you in any worthwhile amount. Don't you realize the odds are against you?"

In any case, in the kind of contest most will follow a strategy that gives them a chance of winning, i.e. choosing something that has the potential to be a multi-bagger, even if it is very high risk. It's not like picking a stock you're actually going to invest in because there is zero cost to picking a loser when there are enough other entrants to get lost among thereby minimizing any cost to one's ego..
