If you live in places like NYC or Berkeley, $75k doesn't suffice to be what we normally consider to be middle class.

Well, maybe it is if you share a house or an apartment with another family that also makes $75k and you are careful about what you spend money on. Housing in particular can be incredibly expensive.

On the other hand, there are many parts of the country where $50k is plenty to live a "middle class" life.
