The reverse. A strong base criticism strengthens a negotiator's position, as in "I can't accept your proposal because it has so much criticism from my base." But, even more important, Krugman's not even a remote player in the discussions within the beltway on this one.

As for the situation being different from Clinton and thus in need of a different negotiating strategy, we simply disagree. Well, there are different elements but not sufficiently to call for a softer negotiating strategy. But, frankly, neither of us know because the difference has not been tested.
