I agree with you. Bush tried to please the left and capitulated too much to their demands. He should have responded to them the way he responded to the smart-ass interviewer who asked him if he knew the president of (some two-bit obscure country, and it doesn't matter which). His response was "What is this, twenty questions?"

In other words, he should have called their bluff more often, used the veto power more often. They were wrong; he was right. But he gave them what they wanted.
