The only time I ate what I'd killed was when I went dove hunting on my uncle's ranch in Texas. Hunting the doves was pretty sporting, since they dart around and change directions so often, it's difficult to hit them even with a shotgun. I killed about half a dozen, my uncle showed me how to twist their heads off and turn them inside out, removing all the skin and the feathers. Then we'd cut them open and remove all the guts and wings, which didn't have enough meat on them to save.

One dove didn't make a meal, but several did. You had to chew them carefully, and spit out the lead shot when you encountered some. They use steel shot now, which you can swallow without harm.

All in all, not a real pleasant meal, though the dove tasted good. I'm off on hunting all creatures now, but I still eat meat.
