$4,000, I was told the same thing. I have insurance to pay for it, but that is nuts. That procedure should not be more than a couple of hundred bucks. I have had it done a few times in the past. It was nothing.

It only takes a few minutes and two people. A doc and nurse.

So I refuse to have it done until I get south and can find a cheaper place to do it. A matter of principle.

Call your insurance company. They'll tell you.
And yeah, it is outrageously expensive. Just like most medical procedures.

As a full time trader I pay for my own health insurance and also have BC/BS. I'm hit by the same thing you are, if you read your policy I'm guessing it will say that it is 'grandfathered' and thus does not have to cover some of the new preventive procedures in the ACA... Your alternative is to either reapply for another policy, (in which case you will be covered by all the new provisions), or perhaps wait till the exchanges are operational and then apply. I'm assuming you also buy your own insurance, if you get it through your employer you should talk to your HR department about the coverage... Apparently the ACA is written is such a way that many of the preventive tests/procedures DON'T have to be covered by existing policies, while these policies will still be subject to things like the deletion of total dollar limits on coverage. Rather sneaky...

Best regards,
John

PS - My wife had the procedure last year, and I can assure you that in the Chicago suburbs it WAS outrageously expensive, to the tune of thousands of dollars....

"does anyone know if colonoscopies are supposed to be covered under insurance as preventative care..."

My doc has been urging me to get one. The cost of the procedure here is around $1500. I knew my insurance company was cheap, so I called them and asked. They said "YES, it's covered!" I asked how much they paid, "$120". No colonoscopy this year!

What I'm wondering if I can switch to an exchange company after Obamacare starts. Supposedly, if you already have insurance, you can't. But if it sucks ass? I haven't gotten my Obamaphone either. I wasn't even given "rewards" for voting for him and giving him money like Mitt said I would.

Are you looking to have it as part of a preventive program? If so, many insurance companies are considering if they should cover it. I had an investment in an Israeli company that has a miniature camera you swallow to do basically what the invasive colonoscopy does.

Thinking is changing on these things. I had one about 6 years ago and I know at the time the Dr. said I would not need another one in my lifetime. Six years ago my insurance covered the entire thing and I basically paid nothing.

Our insurance covers a colonoscopy and is indicated as a preventive procedure - free of charge to us.

However, if polyp(s) are found and removed it is then considered a medical procedure where the deductible is then engaged along with costs over and above.

My Doc is satisified with the poop test.
