The original message of Christianity was indeed suppressed by the Roman church. However, The DaVinci Code is also wrong. There is no evidence of a historical Gnostic Jesus or any other Jesus. The original Christians were indeed Gnostics and realized that the Gospels were conveying their message by myth and allegory.

As the great Canadian literary critic and Bible scholar Northrop Frye wrote: "When the Bible is historically accurate, it is only accidentally so; reporting was not of the slightest interest to its writers. They had a story to tell which could only be told by myth and metaphor; what they wrote became a source of vision rather than doctrine."
