It's a double edged sword as we withdraw forces from Iraq & Afghan we diminish our presence & influence which does create the impression of retreat allowing more freedom for these forces to congeal, consolidate & take power, attacking embassies etc. (that will prolly not happen again, the republicans will make sure of it this time right?) One sees all the right wing alarmists crying bloody sunday & critiques about how the world is burning, we've lost some control but what is the alternative? You can't occupy Egypt or the Gaza strip, stay in Iraq or Afghan permanently especially with the country in financial crisis at peak here. But you can't stop the aid either which has an effect of keeping channels open & the ability to form & maintain some strategic diplomatic bonds without which you find other antagonists very ready to step in & fill that void, like Iran. You withdraw all of our aid today, and we have no leverage, what you try to do is you portion it out depending on how they act. The sanctions on Iran are having the effect of doubling the cost of goods every 40days with inflation rates ending up 20% to finsihing the year at 28%, something is going to give there soon, fwiw, that tact is having full effect. Meanwhile China & Russia maneuver strategically in the region, China has quietly become the most dominant investor (40% of all investments) in making deals in Africa & also growing presence in the ME, which is more unsettling to me than all the right wing whining & partisan distractions @home , ie: bigger picture.
