I also check the dumpster to see what the store discards -- Very surprising, but that's another story.

I never went to that extent in my search for "value". I woulds check the parking lots and/or boxes in the warehouse during the Internet Start Up days here in Silicon Valley during the late 1990 and early 2000. If there were few cars in the employee parking lot and/or little activity at their warehouse it was a "red flag" signal to me that their growth story was not reality. However, when I saw overflow parking into the street and semi's lined up at the receiving dock, I knew that the next earnings report was going to exceed expectations.

Now that most of the High Tech products are manufactured off shore, these type of checks really do not work any longer. I sometimes do a Google Map review to be sure a building exists and if it is a manufacturing site, I look at the truck & rail loading docks too. This is helpful when evaluating micro caps and small cap corporate office locations and/or their small manufacturing facilities.

How things have changed now w/ Google.
