I have been in that theater, it is where I saw "The Matrix" in 1999, one of my all time favorite experiences. I went to the theater with no idea which movie I would see and just picked one, with no prior knowledge about the movie. Under those circumstances it was like finding yourself on the greatest acid trip you could imagine. "The research shows that the prior ban was ineffective. let's talk about actual measures which would prevent the kind of carnage that happened in Aurora and Newtown....if that is even possible." Bans of any kind in a free culture are rarely effective. We've tried it with social drinks and drugs, we've tried it with weapons. We've tried it with books. Shoot, we've tried to ban each other from almost everything even religious worship. We ban each other from committing crimes but the jury is out and will remain out on issues like this because there are people who believe the benefits out weigh the risks and people who believe the opposite. The rational conclusion is that where as committing a crime against others is banned, choices in personal protection and social preference should not be banned until the related issues can be resolved (never gonna happen). I don't drink, drug, engage in sport sex, gamble, own a gun etc ... probably seems pretty boring but its what works for me and I will fight for your right to choose to live your own life and make choices for your self. I prefer to just leave people to their own ways and to be left alone... it doesn't always work out that way though. We are at a critical corner in society right now. We can turn toward more of a police state or we can return to more personal responsibility. Neither side has a very good case on driving us toward one direction or another. One side of the argument feels safe and self reliant in their community life style and doesn't want more government intrusion. The other side are out their on the liberal adventure of total open ended (often out of control) lifestyles. Ironically it is the "liberated" crowd who is looking for someone to take more control over the social climate, and the letter of the law folks who are asking for less. As you know I think the discussion of guns should come after some deep consideration of some other societal issues, like what has changed that makes us feel vulnerable and where do we want to see ourselves as a society. In other words we need to have a more personal discussion about who we are and who we want to be. Then we can talk about the best ways to get to where we want to be.
