J.F, Doren and Dan:

Thanks for your views on that report from Consumer Reports.

I wonder if CR covers my main complaints about iPhone: the ringer volume is limited and that the vibration is real weak. My wife says that I seldom answer her call. I just did not hear the ring which I use the old phone ring tone since it seems the loudest. I wish the vibration will be violent enough to register on the Richter scale. and the ring volume is so strong that it will up the dead.

My frustration caused me to press buttons here and there, and for some reason, I caused the phone not to ring anymore. So, I made an appointment with local Apple store to get my phone fixed. A technical guy helped me, and I was standing in front of him, I explain the problem. The guy next to me smiled, wow, must be a friendly guy.

The apple employee took a look at my phone and said: "Sir, you moved the button on the left to the mute setting. See that red color?" The guy on my left remarked "I saw that when you give him the phone". I guess that's why he had that smile.

I replied, "What red mark? There is no red mark!"
"There it it."
"There is nothing in there."
"I don't see it. I am color blind."
"OK then. If the switch of the side is on the left, it is mute. So, just turn it to the right."

What a relief. In the mean time I want that guy to check whether the maximum volume and the vbirate mode are the strongest iPhone 4S can have. He called my phone and told me, "Yes, that is normal. Nothing wrong with the phone." "But I want a strong alert". Sorry Sir, probably Apple wants to save the battery life..."

So, now I just have to make sure that the side button is not on "red".

I went home, and for many many years married, I don't know what her skin color. Is it white, yellow, brown, black or whatever. I decided not to ask her. After all so many moons we have been happy. Does not matter if she is Caucasian, Asian, Mexican, Filipinos, Hawaiian, or Black. I don't even know my skin color, so what does it matter? The main thing is that I have an iPhone and I love it, except ...

Back to Consumer Reports: hope the article mentions the weak ring and vibration, and hope that Apple will listen to my complaints.

Have a profitable 2013 everyone.

I looked at the CR report on smartphones, and I concur that the results are so close as to render the recommendations meaningless.

Henry Blodgett's piece uses a fanciful phrase of his own, calling the iPhone 5 the "worst of the top smartphones." It comes in third, with an overall rating of 77, for AT&T phones, after the LG Optimus G (79) and the Samsung Galaxy S III (78), which are one and two. So we're talking about a spread of two points between the iPhone and the Optimus.

CR doesn't refer to the iPhone as the "worst of the top smartphones." So I'd say Blodgett isn't telling the unvarnished truth.
