Cadence aims to maintain 30-35 pct growth

SINGAPORE, Dec 3 (Reuters) - U.S. software specialist Cadence Design Systems expects corporate sales to grow at 30-35 percent with Asia's contribution doubling to 20 percent in the next five years, a senior company official said on Wednesday.

''We are forecasting continued significant growth for the next several years (in Asia) above and beyond the 35 percent corporate growth,'' said Richard Cobb, general manager of Cadence Design
Systems, Asia-Pacific.

''At some point in time Asia should be 20 to 30 percent of corporate revenue,'' he said. That level, he said, should be achieved within the next five years.

Cobb was speaking at the signing of a US$10 million software contract awarded to Cadence by Tritech Microelectronics, a member of the Singapore Technologies group.

He said Cadence should be able to maintain its growth rate of between 30 to 35 percent over the next five years.

''Thirty, 35 percent, we belief we can continue to grow at those rate,'' Cobb said.

In 1996, Cadence sales totalled US$742 million and should hit US$1 billion in 1997, he said.

Cobb said the company had been affected slightly by Asia's economic crisis as the bulk of its business is from South Korea, which is negotiating a huge rescue package with the International
Monetary Fund (IMF).

''Traditionally Korea has been our biggest market but this year we have seen some shift,'' he said.

South Korea's contribution to Asian sales had fallen from 50-60 percent to 40 percent this year and next year would fall to 30 percent, he said.

But on an optimistic note, Cobb said: ''The Korean companies have got to make investment in technology and they know that.''

To achieve its aim of raising Asian sales, Cadence has doubled its research and development (R&D) staff in India to more than 300 while a smaller R&D unit in Taiwan is being beefed up, Cobb said.

He said the company had just set up a design factory in Singapore and is looking to open another in India, South Korea and or Taiwan and later China.
