The fact that the Russell 2000 has been one of the leading indices shows that they is an appetite for risk among traders. Usually the small cap stocks lack the large more established companies, so this does ask the question why the small caps are leading this time? It might be an indication that traders don't see a way for these larger companies to growing earning significantly due to their sheer size.

Like you I expect the Russell 2000 to try to fill the gap. As long it does not break the old high there won't be any significant technical damage.
