John,
Good explanation of the way to use these companies.
I realize that I do not have the connections, financial
or technical knowledge, etc. to find venture capital
deals even if they would take money from me.
I know how hard the venture capital business is from
first-hand experience. My father--a physician was an
early backer of a regional medical laboratory. At one
point he owned 14% before they sold additional shares.
Even with other large investors who run corporate divisions
worth 100x the size of the lab, they could not make it.
A few years ago a deal fell through for Corning Labs to
buy the company at a value which would have given us
over $2 million. A month ago, the lab declared chapter 11
and we will be lucky to take out any of our investment.
That long sidenote explains why I agree that we have to
find people who have a proven track record of taking
technology (or ideas) and turning it into successful ventures.
SFE is a great candidate as is TMO. I wish we could get
more voices to offer us other ideas to throw around.
