Obama EPA regulations kill 15 power plants, 480 jobs in Georgia

Georgia Power asked state regulators for permission to shut down 15 power plants yesterday, claiming new regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) make the plants too expensive to run.

The 15 coal-, oil- and natural gas-fired power plants currently produce 2,061 megawatts (MW) for Georgia energy consumers. Georgia Power plans to close 11 of the plants on the exact day the EPA’s new mercury regulations are set to take effect, April 16, 2015. Georgia Power will seek waivers from the EPA to keep four of the other plants open for a single year, and then shut those down too on April 16, 2016. It is unclear how the Georgia energy sector will make the 2 gigawatts up.

The EPA claims its new mercury regulation will produce $140 billion in annual benefits, but only $6 million of the benefits come from actual mercury reductions. According to Dr. Anne Smith, Senior Vice President of NERA Economic Consulting’s Global Environment Group, effectively all of the EPA’s estimated benefits come from “coincidental reductions” of fine particulate matter. But fine particulate matter is already regulated by a separate section of the Clean Air Act.

The plant closures will cause at least 480 fewer power plant jobs and higher electricity rates for all Georgia energy consumers.

NRA: 100,000 new members after Sandy Hook shooting

The National Rifle Association has gained more than 100,000 new members in the past 18 days, the organization told POLITICO’s Playbook on Thursday.

The number of paid new members jumped from 4.1 million to 4.2 million during that time.

“Our goal is to get to 5 million before this debate is over,” the NRA told POLITICO’s Mike Allen.

Those comments come as Vice President Joe Biden gears up to meet with NRA representatives Thursday to discuss gun policy after the Dec. 14 mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., prompted a national conversation on the subject.

“We are willing to talk to policymakers about any reasonable proposals and plans,” an NRA official said in the Playbook report, regarding the upcoming meeting with Biden. “However, the NRA is hearing not just from Beltway elites and the chattering class, but real Americans all over the country that are hoping the NRA is not going to compromise on any of the principles of the Second Amendment, nor are we going to support banning guns. But we’re willing to listen.”

Did you notice anything about this that struck you as "funny"????

Hint - the State of CA request for a stay was denied on 12-13, Sandy Hook was the next day. I've been laughing these cases off as nonsense because the system is so corrupt but there might be something to it. She supposedly has proof of over 1.5 million fraudulent votes in CA alone & now barry's moving to unilaterally dictate gun control, etc.

Edit to add: Supposedly 2-15 is the initial hearing on this matter, same date as one of your (spring) other articles about breaching/reaching the debt ceiling.

Obama signs law giving himself, Bush lifetime Secret Service guard

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/obam ... itics.html

Hmmmmmm.... Bush's protection wouldn't have ended until 2018 and barry's own guard wouldn't end until 10 years after whenever (let's face it its irrelevent to any Believer but I'm guessing he's oblivious to the fact) soooo why do this now if you're barry soetero????

Odd. Odd. Odd, unless he's genuinely afraid of something he's done or is about to do and wants to ensure his own security in the future.
