Who's talking about "fewer guns"?

The idea that we're going to get "fewer guns" is absurd.

There are already, what, hundreds of millions of them? They last forever.

And within a couple years, any person who wants one can simply download the CAD file and print it. This is not something you're going to be able to control in a meaningful way. That's a pipe dream.

The only real control over the use of guns to commit crimes is Mutually Assured Destruction.

The statistics are pretty clear that it works.

Al,
Consider the premise of your "question"...with fewer guns we'd be an even more violent society...so with no guns we'd have even higher than the 11K gun murders we suffer each year? Strains credulity...
We'll never get to "no guns," so how is your argument any better than i-node's?

People often argue over whether gun restrictions increase or decrease violence, but they have it completely wrong. It's violence that leads to gun restrictions, not the other way around.

You should really watch this video - England is way more violent than the USA with or without guns.

Hi Alighieri; Re: "Consider the premise of your "question"...with fewer guns we'd be an even more violent society...so with no guns we'd have even higher than the 11K gun murders we suffer each year? Strains credulity...";

Pre gun societies (European, Native American, Chinese, etc.) had far more people die due to violence than the US has today.

The gun is the "great equalizer". It means that no matter how strong or fast you are, you can't assume that you can get what you want by force from the weaker members of society. The primary useful thing that criminals do while in prison is exercise. They get out more fit than when they went in. They don't need guns to get what they want.
