Why do you say smartphone consumers aren't smart? Because they don't by a really good phone with a crummy ecosystem? In smartphones, I actually think they buy "fashion" more than practicality. But yeah, after a lifetime of marketing/selling products to companies that sell to consumers, I don't think most consumers are very smart. We always had to remind ourselves to shoot for the lowest target, and not get clever. Jobs never asked consumers what they wanted, because HE knew better than them what they needed.
