Chicago's Dirty Secret: Racial Demographics of Violent Crime

These statistics from the Chicago police department are frightening. Most of the violent crime is committed by and to minorites. Gang activity figures heavily in the murder rate.

Where are the "Black Leaders" on this? Prominent blacks who live in Chicago: Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Jesse Jakcson, Jr. , Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Louis Farrakhan, Vernon Jordan, Jesse Jackson, Sr., Linda Johnson Rice, bobby Seale, and Julian Bond.

From Chicago PD Report, 2010:

2010 Demographics, Chicago In 2010, Chicago was 32.9% African-American, 28.9% Hispanic, 31.7% White, and 5.5% Asian.

Murder Stats 2010 Chicago, Demographic

In 2010, African-Americans accounted for 76.2% of murder arrests and Hispanics accounted for 19.3% of murder arrests in Chicago. 95.5% of murder arrests in Chicago were African-American and Hispanic.

>I don't know. He was focused on a spike in crime in the 1980s. He believes the spike may have been due to lead in gas. Sounds plausible. However, reducing lead in gas hasn't changed the fact that crime is higher in the poorer, denser parts of American cities.

Right. So it doesn't account for all of the crime difference by population density... but it does account for the trends in it. Crime is still higher in poorer, denser parts of cities than it is in wealthier, less dense ones, but crime in those poorer and denser areas is lower in 2012 than it was in 1980.

Yes, there is not question that lead is a dangerous substance when it enters the body. Its why for decades HUD has required that lead based paint in a project undergoing rehab be encapsulated. Yes, lead was put in paints, making the paint taste sweet to small children. They would be exposed to the paint thru lead dust or by eating it. Lead paint is esp toxic to kids but it is harmful to adults as well. The production of lead based paint is been prohibited in the US for decades but there are still bldgs in poorer neighborhoods that have not been repainted and people are still exposed to lead based paint.
