Ted, I know of a Korean family, very well-off, close to me and my wife, whose father bought a gun in the wake of the 1992 LA Riots.

Unfortunately the only time he actually used that gun, to my knowledge, was to threaten his wife during an argument. Yes, he even fired it inside the house a few times.

To those who say that he could have easily used a knife, I say the following:

1) The barrier to violence is lowered with the gun. Once it's loaded, it's stupid easy to pull the trigger.

2) The stray bullets could have killed the kids.

I think the worse examples are when kids find the guns and use them as toys and shoot each other, or in the case of Newtown, the guy uses the guns to shoot others. Guns are such an intrinsic part of our culture I think we forget how deadly they are.

Your family friend has mental problems.

I say bullshit to the ease of use of a gun. It is much easier to pick up a large kitchen knife or hammer than it is to go get your gun safe, unlock it, load your weapon, than go back to your argument with the wife and threaten her.

His family members should take his gun away, steal it if they have to. He's the kind of person who's too emotionally unstable to own a weapon.
