That's funny, was just looking at an X1. Bottom of the line X1 is basically same price as a loaded CR-V. Except a bit less reliable, with higher routine maintenance costs. But also a (reasonably) clearly superior vehicle in terms of drivability and comfort.
I haven't checked out the X1 but I want to. I bought a 318ti (like the picture below except green) back in 1995. My understanding was that it was a lower cost car to bring young people into the BMW fold. It worked for me except I have never upgraded. I have a 5 speed and the thing moves well for a 4 banger and gets great gas mileage. It has been very reliable. I am a satisfied customer and will certainly consider BMW (but not Mercedes - we have one of those as well) and do want to check out the X1.

Since I started the car analogy with Apple - This is along the lines what I think they can do. Not build Yugos but build a quality less expensive model to bring cost conscious buyers into the fold and give them a better entry into developing markets.
