You mean handguns. It comes from the Right's basic distrust of reality. Which is sort of understandable. They have put a lot of effort into constructing a whole alternate, self contained "reality" and it just isn't the same as the one they share with us. So they have to change one of them. Unfortunately, they decided to try to change the one that actually exists... Sort of like the Ministry of Truth in 1984. Somewhere along the line they decided it wasn't a warning of a dystopian world, but a how--to manual on how governments should operate.
