We are not required to support Israel no matter what they decide to do. If Israel decides to nukes its neighbors for example, the US should not feel bound to support Israel. Israel should not operate under the misguided notion that they have a blank check from the US. It can be a strong relationship only so long as Israel recognizes that we have interests as well -- and ours are not served by the blatant adoption of Israeli actions that lead to the destruction of any and all hope for peace.

Is this the best analysis we can come up with? He views the government of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas as weak, but he has become convinced that Netanyahu is so captive to the settler lobby, and so uninterested in making anything more than the slightest conciliatory gesture toward Palestinian moderates, that an investment of presidential interest in the peace process wouldn’t be a wise use of his time. Jewish lobby, NRA lobby, etc etc doesn't anyone give a shit about the people?
