I remember a young fellow who just started college - the son of a friend, as a matter of fact. He developed serious problems with social anxiety, to the point that he was very close to dropping out of school. A small dose of a SSRI, taken for a few months, helped him quite dramatically. In a few months the young man became one of the key people at the campus radio station. A few years later, with a degree in communications, he was earning more than I ever did.... :) He is quite successful. And he wasn't even depressed. In great numbers of cases of serious depression these medications are true life savers.
