Funny you mention Ameritrade I just received some info from them. They're based in Omaha and seemed to have a decent product. My taxable portfolio is basically for the kids, I don't trade in it. I looked into a custodian account and decided against it. When they turn 19 the money in the account is automatically theirs. I know what I would have done with a large amount of cash at 19. Yes, I could use some creative accounting and show I spent all their money to raise them, but thats alot of mess. Someday I may open them each a drip account and transfer some of my shares to them, thats free.
