general practitioners hand out antidepressants like candy
I don't think it's like candy, but they do have to prescribe those drugs. There is 1) a shortage of psychiatrists, 2) they are expensive, and 3) there is a stigma attached. This current public debate doesn't help -- people will be even more reluctant to get psych help, out of fear that - because of a record of having seen a shrink - the police will come and take their guns away.

I recall listening to a lecture by a psychiatrist who was convinced that in many cases of depression, maybe in most cases, it is important to start a mood stabilizer before beginning a course of SSRI's. Why? Because it is a known fact that often, as the treatment starts, the energy and the ability to act return first - before the dark depressed moods, the anger and other bad emotions begin to subside.

So, the understanding of psychiatric illnesses and our expertise in the use of psych medications continue to evolve. Opinions of "activists" notwithstanding, shooting down the entire field would be an absurd medieval witch hunt.

...Speaking of middle ages... Back in those days they would have said that a person like Adam Lanza was possessed by the Devil, by evil spirits. At least, back then people had a conceptual framework which allowed them to deal with such events. Nowadays, despite our youngsters spending hours every day, fantasizing about shooting in the head thousands of zombies or other diminished, dehumanized creatures - we expect that our actual reality will always remain rational, safe and explicable.
