It's a quick write-up as a jumping off point. Maybe Craig has something in mind already. But I'd like to get my voice in there to make sure that the look and feel of SI remains and the sense of community remains. ==================================================== My concept for Silicon Investor as a social networking site is based on the same structure as the United States. It would allow a certain amount of autonomy and control to individuals while providing a bigger umbrella for the entire site. Individuals would have profiles much as they exist today. However they would have the ability to have photo albums, post documents and save videos and describe themselves. And each individual profile would have one thread/forum over which they have complete control. They could ban or not ban people. They can have white lists or black lists. They can delete any message posted to their thread/forum and they can control the topic. These would compare to the states. Then there would be the public threads/forums. Anybody could start a new topic, but only the site administrators could ban or delete messages. The site administrators would create the general headings (investing, sports, politics, humor, classifieds, personals, live chat, etc…). Content would have stricter rules concerning cursing and fighting so as to appeal to a wider audience. For the legacy users, there is no reason that their SI experience has to be altered significantly. Their profile will be much the same, with the added ability to create photo albums and save videos. They can create threads/forums, but they would only have one thread that is under their complete control. That thread would be associated with their profile, much like a Facebook wall, but in SI’s format. New users can spiff up their profile and use it much like facebook or myspace. The profiles can support professional linkages like Linkedin. Classified forums would cover the craigslist angle and the personals/live chat would cover the match.com/eharmony/adultfriendfinder crowd. Profiles could be created for youth sports teams or clubs. Instead of sending out emails, communications can be handled on the team’s profile thread. I do this on facebook already, but it is a pain in the ass and I hate the facebook user interface. The team or club profile becomes the webpage for the team. The community vibe is one of SI’s great features. But instead of limiting it to an investing community, let’s open it up to a bunch of different communities that can all intermingle….just like in real life. I’m not a graphics guy, but I could describe what I see to someone like SI Ron and he would be able to throw together a mock up that would give a flavor what this site could become.
