Net telephony gets closer

ITXC Corp. a startup backed by AT&T Corp., said Wednesday it's
offering to provide services to encourage the development of
Internet telephony. ITXC's "middleman" services will make it
possible for callers using regular telephones to have their calls
distributed over the Internet, at substantially lower costs.

Key to ITXC's plans is an agreement, also announced Wednesday,
with iPass Inc., a provider of third-party settlement for
Internet-based services. "The combination of iPass' proven
authentication and settlement service with ITXC's expertise in IP
Telephony will accelerate development of the IP Telephony market
as a whole. Until now it was simply not practical for individual
ITSPs to provide true global coverage; ITXC changes all this,"
said
Chris Moore president and CEO of Mountain View, Ca.-based iPass.

Internet telephony consultant Jeff Pulver told Internet Daily the
deal means ITXC becomes a technology-providing and billing service
to "next generation" telephone companies that will exploit
Internet telephony worldwide. The value of iPass's software,
Pulver said, "is the enabling technology which ITXC needs in order
to 'be in business'." The value of the Internet telephony market's
potential is astounding, according to International Data Corp. of
Framingham, Mass. IDC estimates traditional international phone
calls will total 79 billion minutes this year. By comparison,
Internet telephony call minutes are believed to be about 198
million, and are growing 220 percent a year.
