At the time? No.

He was on the autism spectrum. They typically don't like change. His mom was planning on moving to Washington state to put him in a school that specializes in people who are on the spectrum. His mom had pulled him out of public school when he was 16 and home schooled him. He likely rarely left the house. That house was his world. And he likely panicked and did something stupid. He targeted a school that he once attended. Probably because he was bullied. Not shoved around type of bullying, but held down and kicked in the face type of bullying. Not that can excuse what he did, nothing can excuse that. Just trying to explain how it could have happened.
