He was legal to use the rifle and shotgun for lawful purposes outside the home - so yes he could have gone to a gun range or hunting. He could even use the handguns inside the house to defend himself, but outside the house he can not.

He was not the legal owner of any of the guns and he used them without the owners knowledge or permission and used them in an unlawful manner.

He stole them.

I understand in your socialist mindset all property in a house is owned by the collective family - but in the legal system and especially with regard to firearms - it's theft.
