Ames Reports November Sales

ROCKY HILL, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 4, 1997--Ames Department Stores Inc. (NASDAQ:
AMES - news) today announced net sales of $239.5 million for the four weeks ended Nov. 22, 1997,
compared with net sales of $223.0 million for the four weeks ended Nov. 23, 1996, an increase of 7.4
percent. Comparable-store sales for the period were $216.8 million, compared with $203.4 million in
the same period last year, an increase of 6.6 percent. Comparable-store sales are based on 275 stores.

Net sales for the 43-week year-to-date period were $1.703 billion, compared with $1.678 billion in the
year-earlier period, an increase of 1.5 percent. Comparable-store sales for the period were $1.554
billion, compared with $1.531 billion last year, an increase of 1.5 percent.

Joseph R. Ettore, Ames' president and chief executive officer, said, ''We were pleased with November
sales results, which were above plan and last year in many categories, including appliances, housewares,
trim-a-tree, furniture and toys. Apparel sales continue to show strength, especially in the ladies'
department. Infants' apparel made a strong showing for the month.

''Ames is well-positioned for the remainder of the holiday season. We continue to generate strong
traffic with effective promotions and marketing efforts. Ames' successful 55 Gold(R) and Special Buy
programs continue to help drive customer traffic during the competitive holiday season.''

Ames, which operates 298 stores in 14 Northeastern states and the District of Columbia, is the nation's
sixth-largest discount chain, with annual total sales of $2.2 billion.
