The primary role of politicians is to keep the principle ideas of America strong. The terms Civil Liberty, Human Rights, Equality, and Freedom are all calling cards of American principles. As Americans we hold these ideas as essentially conditional to being human, while recognizing they are common to all human beings American and otherwise. Of course these are important issues with people around the world but America was founded to be one of the first experiments to engrain these ideas as a foundation to our society. “Liberty of hand and brain -- of thought and labor, liberty is a word hated by kings -- loathed by popes. It is a word that shatters thrones and altars -- that leaves the crowned without subjects, and the outstretched hand of superstition without alms. Liberty is the blossom and fruit of justice -- the perfume of mercy. Liberty is the seed and soil, the air and light, the dew and rain of progress, love and joy. “ (Robert G. Ingersoll 1894) "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." UDHR art. 1 Freedom is the quality or state of being free: as. a : the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action. (Merriam-Webster) So when I see expressions like "winger outrage" whether it is right-wing outrage or left-wing outrage it is usually either in reference to a perceived threat from the other side or in reference to a way to damage the other side. When Obama made the comment about voters clinging to their "guns and religion," or when Romney referred to 47% who don't think they "should take personal responsibility and care for their lives." These type of comments are directional. If the left can threaten the freedom associated with "guns and religion" they strengthen their position against the right. If the right can threaten the freedom associated with social welfare benefits, they strengthen their position against the right. However, the primary task of strengthening the broad range of freedom in America in either case is lost... and over time as the polarizing battles are waged we have seen a deterioration. Of course the issues under concern are important but it would be to our best interests to approach them with a collaborative mind set rather than in the polarized destructive manner that has become so familiar.
