I think it didn't work because people don't like paying dues for social media sites and hate ads.

Only some people. Old generation (early internet users) hate ads. New generation (sub)consciously understand that ads pay the toll for free content/services. The new generation doesn't see ads as a change but rather as the norm. The old generation see it as a change, and its human nature to resist change.
