Beverley - the Market Makers job, in theory at least, is to maintain a liquid market by committing the firms capital and maintaining a position. If they had to call and borrow shares every time an order made them short, the market would grind to a halt. MM's are allowed to short stock without first borrowing them, what you hear on this thread and other discussion groups to the contrary is wrong.
