I think a lot of people are underestimating the difficulty of predicting what he did.

While gun control clearly isn't a "solution", psych evaluation isn't, either. You may have a chance of catching it, but our system is such that there are not nearly enough trained medical professionals to be doing psych evals on every kid with problems.

My personal view is that the best thing that could be done would for the news media and Hollywood to voluntarily curtail coverage of these events and the levels of violence in movies and (particularly) the elimination of first-person shooter video games. If you have decided your life is worthless and you want to make your mark you may rationalize that you could do nothing better than make a month's worth of headlines. And there is little doubt movies and video games desensitize, on some level, a person to violence.

But the problem is surely bigger than that.
