"Their share at VZ is north of 60% and likely near 80% at AT&T. "

Despite this, Android still has 45% market share in the US from dominating the prepaid market.

Thinking out loud here, but if Apple did release a $300 model overseas, the US carriers would cry foul for not getting it as a lower subsidy offering. There might be some benefit to Apple streamlining their product offerings to a $200 high end model ($650 before subsidy) and a free low end model ($300 before subsidy), eliminating the current 4/4S line. It would actually push the mix towards the high end since the $200 model and the free model would presumably be more differentiated in the post-paid market. The mix at Verizon, for instance, only needs to go from 50% iPhone 5 to 75% iPhone 5 for ASP to come out the same.

Elsewhere, the $300 iPhone would represent greenfield business.

Apple still needs to be more accommodating down the road.
