I hear you.I remember reading about that.To bad he didn't protect his family..Probably just like mogue and GST.Thought it could never happen to him..And the very reason I have dogs..If a mouse farts down the street they alert..Absolutely no freakin way anyone could get in my house without me having advance notice..I recommend the American Bulldog.About 80 lbs of nothing nice if you are a stranger and invade "his" territory..Very high guardian instincts and loves kids and gentle as a lamb if you are "his".My chow is the very same..

"but one must remember they usually don't prevent the crime."

the vast majority of my interaction with police has been in the realm of getting tickets over minor bs(i.e. taxing the middle class).

I can't think of a single incident in which the police actually came and defused a situation, prevented a crime, recovered stolen property, etc. One of the worst experiences was when a cop tried to arrest my wife for attempted murder after an ice head assaulted her! in that case, 2 witnesses came by just as the cops were ready to hand cuff her and they totally corroborated her story. of course they drove off without going down the street to the ice heads houses. He didn't even get a ticket, much less anything for assaulting her.
