I think it's amazing. 3G Android sales totaled about 150K phones for Verizon last quarter vs 3 million iPhone 4 and 4S. Those sales may seem boring to everyone pumped up about the iPhone 5 and 4G activations, but Apple still carried 50% market share for 4G phones this quarter for VZ. In the end, Apple grabbed about 67% market share for Verizon last quarter. I expect the same for most 3G/4G carriers. It's interesting that VZ said almost nothing about the Windows phones too.

I keep thinking about the size of the replacement market as it develops this year. As 4G markets continue to develop this year in the US and elsewhere, I would expect 4G phones to gradually phase out the 3G market in a couple years. By mid year, that leads to a sequential growth for Apple for another couple of years. They had better be ready for it with more than just 1 4G iPhone!

I think Samsung alone had 37 smartphones on the market last year
According to this site, Samsung have 137 Android based models available for sale.

  • Of those there are 30 models that have been introduced since the advent of Android's Ice Cream Sandwich OS (intro'd Oct 2011).
  • There are 8 models that have arrived since the arrival of Android's Jellybean Sandwich (intro'd June 2012).

"I think Samsung alone had 37 smartphones on the market last year. Combine those with all other Android phones and they still can't compete with "old" iPhones."

Aren't you comparing Apple's and oranges here? Yes, 4/4S nearly outsold all Android phones at Verizon this quarter, but Samsung doesn't have 37 models at Verizon. Conversely, if you consider the global market, where all Samsung's Android handsets are sold, they absolutely outsold the iPhone 4 and 4S combined. Probably even if you were to throw the iPhone 5 into the mix.
