There are already several states without state income taxes. If that was a big factor, they'd already be gone.

For example, Texas has no state income tax. Who is just to the east?

Louisiana.

For them, that well is dry. Unless they greatly cut spending, they need to replace that money with something. The usual suspects are sales taxes. Which disproportionately impact the poor and the middle class.
