They can't just double resolution either, as they're already way beyond the eye's ability to discern the difference, and it's a major hit on processor/power consumption.


My first thought was that you are right, but thinking more about it, doubling the resolution would take Apple to 2272 x 1280. That isnt that far off the 1920 x 1080 full HD handsets that are hitting the market this year. The Galaxy S4 is supposed to support the resolution with a 5" display.

I know Sharp has shown IGZO displays with resolutions of 500ppi so I would assume that they could support the 543ppi necessary for a 4.8" 2272 x 1280 display. Probably not a 2013 thing, but maybe in 2014.

I certainly hope that they arent married to the 4" display as the "right" size. The fact that they were willing to introduce an iPad Mini gives me some hope in this direction. Many of the reviewers/anecdotal stories I have read indicate that people with both versions actually prefer the Mini...and that is despite the inferior screen. There is simply no universal screen size for mobile devices.
