Sure.. I regularly took the train.. was involved in derailment. Very exciting... really ... flames everywhere.. (was in first class right behind the engine) ... people screaming ... All were OK.. Had to hike about 4 klics through scrub too safety.. helping woman with one shoe...(The Good Canadian LOL) Imagine if that was a freight train full of tankers.. Just takes one...

Good question. Would guess that the rail option is too costly. That and matched refineries or ship loading facilities do not currently exist.

I am waiting for the interventionist Parti québécois government in la belle province to devise a master industrial strategy whereby the provincial government would green-light a series of bitumen and heavy oil refineries. This kind of grandiose project would likely receive considerable public support from both federal and provincial governments. Québec has Utica shale natural gas that could provide cheap power.
