One thing I haven't mentioned -- diversifying not only offers portfolio return-variance-reduction that's easy to mathematically demonstrate, but it also offers a huge tax advantage that's easy to mathematically demonstrate. I'd be happy to show such demonstrations to interested parties.

He wrote back that he was considering the matter seriously. A week later he wrote again to say that he had decided that his gains were so large that he could afford to let things ride while he took a long vacation with his hard-earned profits. I never heard from him again.

I remember this. I could only hope he was not serious about the 'only stock' story!
