The article you linked to says "it stands to reason that he was a Republican." Then it just explains that it's because Republicans abolished slavery. Do the words "Southern Strategy" mean anything to you? Does it seem like mere coincidence that the "Solid South" went from entirely Democratic to entirely Republican? The parties were sectional until a few decades ago. -Z
