Paul,

They seem to be able to keep up with their shipments. The Lattitudes and Inspiron arive about 13 days after order configured as you like. The Workstation 400 arrives in 7 days. These are working days not calendar and include UPS ground shipment. You can also get them shipped Airborne express.

The salesman I spoke to said they did not have enough salesmen to process all the home office/consumer business.

One thing is clear they do have their processes down cold. So when they add new people it should not be disruptive.I think they may be having some difficulty hiring new personel do to shortages of qualified people. They may have to recruit in Houston.

As far as the fixed assets, I don't know if that is a problem. I don't think so.

I am going to be buying two computers from them and upgrading my Optiplex soon for home use. I will see how well they perform and let you know.

Regards,

Jim Kelley

Paul re:

Jim, the one concern I do have about Dell is it's ability to keep up with demand.

This is one of the points I've been making to all those
who are convinced Dell should dive head first into the high
volume sub-zero segment. Can you imagine how that might
stress the organization?

I toured the new Austin facility about 2 weeks after everyone
on this thread. I asked about capacity there and they said
they are only running two shifts right now and didn't have all
the mod's up.. Average daily volume is about 7500 systems. If I remember correctly, at full capacity w/ three shifts, all mods,
they would max out at about 20k/day. Current output from "all"
factories WW is about 20k/day right now. My guess is that they
could easily double to 40k without a new factory and will
likely be there in 8-10 quarters... thats why they're
looking to build another factory.... soon!

<Remember, the reason JBIL got hammered is that it ran out of manufacturing capacity>

JBIL is also an assembler for USRX/ COMS COMS is reducing chanel inventory by 10 weeks. That will slob JBIL's factories a little.
That is the main reason JBIL is getting hit.
