That would have been because the riots and violence were in Bombay, not Cochin. <Curious why your friend in Kerela did not warn you against Keralite Muslims (24% of population of Kerela is Muslim en.wikipedia.org vs 18 percent in Mumbai). The bad muslims always seem far away in Mumbai or Pakistan, not among their own familiar neighbors. >

It's often the case the the trouble is focused on major centres. Back in the days of riots in New Zealand over South African apartheid and All Black versus Springbok footy, Tauranga as peaceable and tranquil. There are many Negroes living in small towns and cities in the USA but the violent racial riots are normally reserved for Los Angeles, Detroit, Watts and places where a quorum is easy to gather. In England, the riots were mostly around London and the big cities. Small places are generally more companionable.

It turned out that the riots were a bit too close for comfort. We caught a bus which turned out to be a military bus of some sort, which took us through the mess. Actually, in that case, the riots were not by Moslems. Maybe it was Dalits? June 1997
