China's PC growth..................................

China Helps PC Growth in Asia Pacific
PC shipments in the Asia Pacific region jumped 18 percent to reach 2.2 million units in the third quarter of 1997, led by growth in China where more than 27 percent of units were sold, according to Dataquest. Shipments in that country grew 60 percent to reach 608,000 units, compared with the same period a year earlier. Withmarket share dropping from 8 percent for third quarter of 1996 to 6.7 percent for the same period in the most recent quarter, Compaq Computer Corp. [CPQ] slipped to second place. Samsung Corp. moved into the top spot with market share of 7.1 percent, despite experiencing a share loss of 0.8 percent, compared with its 7.9 percent share for the same quarter a year earlier.
